The Peel Street Historic Area of downtown Gisborne is a heritage listed zone. The area contains well preserved early twentieth century town buildings, with interesting historical links dating back to the early settlement of Gisborne and the subsequent commercial development of the town. The original Peel Street Toilet had been out of action for some time due to structural Earthquake strengthening needed for the main structure. Once complete, we were able to build a new Accessible Single Pan Public Toilet inside the upgraded historic structure

Peel Street Historic Area, central Gisborne
The location of the Peel Street public toilet was challenging from the beginning, due to being in the middle of a principal town thoroughfare. Careful planning was needed to ensure road access for our trades and machinery was well managed with minimal disruption to the general public - both traffic and pedestrians.
The toilet upgrade was outfitted with a Permaloo Single Pan Toilet, Stainless Steel Basin, Heavy Duty Recessed Hand Dryer and a Recessed Stainless Steel Baby Change table. The fixtures were selected with anti-graffiti and anti-vandalism in mind, as this public toilet has a long history of vandalism.
Being a heritage listed building, we needed to be particularly careful during our planning and installation, that the integrity of the external building was considered and protected.
