Tauranga Waterfront Public Toilet

Our brief was to develop a new Public Toilet with specific requirements for the popular coastal setting and new playground development. Accessibility and usability were top of mind in our design process and finished site build.

Client

Tauranga City Council

Location

The Strand Reserve, Tauranga

Tauranga’s city centre has a stunning waterfront setting. The Strand Reserve has tidal steps, a pier with diving and bombing platform, and even Hairy Maclary sculptures. A new development is progressing with our stunning Public Toilet front and centre, adjoining a new playground and splash pad development.

Given the high traffic location and future development plans, we designed a custom built waterfront structure with a mix of hardwood slats, inviting yellow doors, incorporated greenery and shade sails. The Public Toilet facility has external change rooms, outdoor showers and basins and a specialist disabled changing space. We also needed to incorporate a large pump room for the future splash pad development, next to the new playground and popular swimming spot.

Coastal locations need hard wearing materials to manage the harsh conditions. An External Hand Washing Station with a multi-tap basin was designed in concrete, stainless steel and hardwood with wear and tear from the public and environment in mind. The vibrant yellow doors and Vitex Hardwood Slats bring a sense of design and fun into the design, fitting for the family friendly area, with greenery incorporated into the structure’s frontage to soften the functional structure.

During the project, site access was made more difficult due to working around other contractors installing the playground. Thankfully, great communication and planning from our team ensured that the build time wasn’t impacted by surrounding works.
